Before being closed off by snowfall, Kebler at just over 10,000' provides amazing views of the West Elk Mountains along a meandering high mountain road.

Equally spectacular is the vast groves of Quaking Aspen trees all along the way. This aspen grove has been tested and found to be a clonal colony and remarkably grows from a single root system. Every tree is connected to the other and thus considered biologically to be a single living organism.

lutionary War, and had his drum shot out from his side at the Siege
of Yorktown, later receiving a pension for his services in the conflict.

He was an odd but genial character. He located in Springfield
in 1814; he was a short, round man, with a jolly face, and soon
became known as "Little Daddy Vicory."

He did not lack
courage, as will be seen from the following narrative. "Early
on a Sunday morning, while living in Springfield, he discovered
a thief stealing bacon from his smoke-house ; securing a rope he
caught the thief and tied him securely until the hour when people
were on their way to church, when he drove him to the Presby-
terian Meeting-House, under the persuasive influence of a large
club, with two sides of bacon tied to his shoulders, taking him
to the door of the church he asked the people, there assembled, if
they claimed him as one of their members. This was such a
humiliating lesson that the thief, upon being released, disappeared
and never was seen in the town again."

Soon after locating in
Springfield, Merrifield Vicory bought ten acres of the land on
what afterward became the east end of High Street. He died
in March, 1849, in the seventy-eighth year of his age, and was
buried with military honors in Greenmount Cemetery.

Besides fishing and dining, the creek is the premier spot for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) kayaking and recreational boaters. With its deep channel and twice daily tides, Shem Creek is one of the easiest spots in Charleston to spot bottlenose dolphins swimming and fishing in the creek. Birds include pelicans, ibis, snowy egrets, and seagulls.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://traveltheworldover.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/dsc03732.jpg</image:loc><image:title>DSC03732</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://traveltheworldover.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/dsc03727.jpg</image:loc><image:title>DSC03727</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://traveltheworldover.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/dsc03726.jpg</image:loc><image:title>DSC03726</image:title><image:caption>The setting sun reflects on the tall masts of shrimp trawlers lined up at the end of Shem Creek.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://traveltheworldover.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/cam_0028.jpg</image:loc><image:title>DCIM100PHOTO</image:title><image:caption>Toward the Coleman Boulevard bridge, a half dozen seafood-themed restaurants, including a faux lighthouse and genuine but converted icehouse. Outside the gates of the historic town museum, which look familiar if you have watched the show, is a small store featuring t-shirts, posters, and characters from the show. Aside from that, the town has obviously mixed feelings about the connection.

The creators of the show, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, used Fairplay as the model for their mostly fictional look at modern life in a rural Colorado town.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://traveltheworldover.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/dsc03039.jpg</image:loc><image:title>DSC03039</image:title><image:caption>Southpark, after flying into Denver, was the first stop on our month long exploration of the American West.

Although not technically a town but a collection of mostly moved historic buildings outside of Fairplay, Colorado, Southpark City provides a genuine glimpse of a nineteenth century Rocky Mountain mining town.

The area, at over 8,500' lies in a fairly lush valley supplied by three forks of the South Platte River and the site of countless encounters between native Ute's, invading Spanish, Americans like Zeb Pike, fur trappers, traders, cattle ranchers, and in 1859-gold seekers.

The Governor's Mansion, completed around 1907, and built at great expense to the Kaiser back home in Germany is a terrific peak at life during the Imperial German occupation. The 30 room interior resembles a Bavarian hunting castle while the exterior an example of the Art Nouveau, has hosted many dignitaries during the past century.

Chairman Mao stayed here with his family in 1957 during the heyday of China's Cultural Revolution as well as Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh in the 1960's.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://traveltheworldover.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/dsc02255.jpg</image:loc><image:title>DSC02255</image:title><image:caption>Xianggang Lu or Hong Kong Road, renamed in 1997 in honor of the British return of Hong Kong to China, lights up every night after sunset in central Qingdao.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://traveltheworldover.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/dsc02253.jpg</image:loc><image:title>DSC02253</image:title><image:caption>Many modern skyscrapers in China feature nightly LED lighting shows lasting until late in the evening.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://traveltheworldover.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/dsc01923.jpg</image:loc><image:title>DSC01923</image:title><image:caption>Looking east toward the rising sun over the Laoshan Mountains, the building that houses the Qingdao Amerasia International School catches the early light.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://traveltheworldover.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/dsc02252.jpg</image:loc><image:title>DSC02252</image:title><image:caption>"The Wind of May", weighing in at over 700 tons of steel, looks spectacular lit up at night in Qingdao's May 4th Square. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://traveltheworldover.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/dsc02249.jpg</image:loc><image:title>DSC02249</image:title><image:caption>The May 4 Square was named to commemorate the patriotic student movement that began there in 1919 in reaction to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in Paris.
