I first learned of Tian’anmen Square, like most Westerners during the student protests in 1989 and the infamous tanks rolling across the square (and protesters).  The iconic giant painting of Chairman Mao still looms over the square to the south, the place where modern China began in 1949, thanks to his proclaiming a new nation.
