City of God

City God Temple in Shanghai is a Taoist temple dedicated to local immortal gods who protect the local area from at least 1403. During the Qing Dynasty, the temple grew popular and citizens of the old city regularly visited the temple to pray for good fortune and peace. The temple was closed down during the 1950’s Cultural Revolution, later used as a jewelry store and still later restored and reopened as a temple.
