Today begins the two week break from school for Chinese New Year or Spring Festival as it is also known. Alex and I wore traditional costumes like the rest of the school as all the students performed in their Chinese class skits, songs, and games. We discovered that firecrackers are such an important part of Chinese culture (and used every night for a month) because legend says that a monster will eat China’s children unless it is scared away with loud noises. Alex creates his own loud noises so no worries here. He also reminded me that it is a custom to reward good children with gifts and money. I reminded him that it was for good children.
