Friday there was an elevator door here. This morning, they walled it up but curiously left the buttons. The purpose was to keep the hotel guests on the ten floors above the school from suddenly finding themselves wandering the halls and classrooms looking for the ice machine. 

The door below was constructed in both fire stairwells for the same purpose.  Note the sliding door lock.  I wonder if China has fire marshals?
