Peaking out from high walls are the colorful rooftops of the Forbidden City, built beginning in 1421 and completed in 17 years and home to 24 successive emperors over the course of half a millennium. The complex has over 8,700 rooms and at times housed well over 10,000 people, a third of whom served the palace as maids, cooks, servants, and concubines.
